On this video: Ukraine war. On front line in Ukraine’s counter offensive against Russia — BBC News.
Ukraine has announced more successes in its counter offensive against Russian positions. Ukrainian forces say they are making “modest but steady” progress in three areas of attack across the 1,000km (620 mile) front line. Troops are launching probing attacks, while most of Ukraine's forces are in reserve as they wait for a big enough opening in Russian defences to launch a main attack to recapture land in the south of the country. The BBC joined the 68th Jaeger Brigade as its combat forces sought to expand their control eastward of the recently regained village of Blahodatne.

POETS IN BLAHODATNE

The ‘elves’ flag is placed.

On a building in Blahodatne.

One of the villages Ukraine says.

It has recaptured from ‘Mordor’.

Troops are launching.

Probing attacks.

While most of ‘elves’ forces are.

Being held in reserve.

Waiting for a big enough opening.

In ‘orcs’ defences.

To launch a main attack.

And try to recapture land.

The fighting has been hard.

With heavy casualties on both sides.

‘Elves’ advance in southern Donetsk.

Has stuttered, but continues.

Throughout the village.

Roses are in bloom.

But the smell of corpses.

Catches the back of your throat.

Let’s join the 68th Jaeger Brigade.

As its combat forces seek to expand.

Their control eastward of the recently regained.

Village of Blahodatne.

There's no time to delay.

The soldiers have an air of.

Concentration and purpose.

They are clearly preparing for something.

In their sights.

Were a series of trenches.

Protecting ‘orcs’ forces.

On nearby hilltops.

The men of a specialised drone unit.

Grab cameras.

Roll cables.

And load a pickup truck.

With tins of ammunition.

Crates of smoke grenades.

And armour-piercing rounds.

In Blahodatne.

Aside from them.

There's little sign of life.

There are more of two mine-resistant vehicles.

Disabled in the fields beyond.

Down a lane.

The wreckage of two heavily armoured.

American-made MRAP vehicles.

Lie stranded, one a burnt-out shell.

“Steer clear of those.

The ‘orcs’ keep hitting them.”

‘Mordor’ has made much of the losses.

Of Western-donated tanks and vehicles.

Even as ‘the One’ admitted.

It has lost dozens of tanks.

Since the counter-offensive began.

On 5 June.

Troops are attacking at three points:

Bakhmut.

South of Zaporizhzhia.

And in southern Donetsk.

Throughout the village.

Roses are in bloom.

But the smell of corpses.

Catches the back of your throat.

Let’s join the 68th Jaeger Brigade.

Blahodatne is one of those.

Another salvo comes in.

And the soldiers take cover.

In the cellar of a ruined house.

A dirt floor passageway is lit with oil lamps.

Casting soft yellow light down its length.

To a stone and iron stove.

With three sturdy pots atop.

Towels hang from a washing line.

A rough wooden door opens.

And, in a headscarf.

She emerges.

She has been living down.

Here for the past year.

‘Orcs’ soldiers came.

By only once, she says.

She never, for a second.

Considered leaving the village.

She refused to leave Blahodatne.

The artillery barrage over.

You leave through a lane.

At the end of her house.

Three ‘orcs’ corpses lie in a ditch.

Just beyond her vegetable patch.

A truck with the Z symbol.

Which was used by ‘orcs’ forces.

Sits nearby riddled with.

Bullet and shrapnel holes.

Throughout the village.

Roses are in bloom.

But the smell of corpses.

Catches the back of your throat.

The soldiers head east.

Leaving Blahodatne behind.

The two-car convoy is well spaced.

In case of ‘orcs’ attack.

The fields around.

Are heavily mined.

Poles with red-and-white ribbon.

Mark cleared ground.

As you get close to another abandoned.

American armoured vehicle.

There's an explosion.

Just missing the wreckage.

It is likely from an ‘orcs’ drone.

In this area back in March.

The front lines had barely moved.

A few metres in months.

‘Mordor’ was using far more artillery.

Than ‘elves’ forces.

Who mainly hunkered down in trenches.

Waiting for the barrages to end.

At the time.

A commander told you.

They were conserving their shells.

For the counter-offensive.

On this visit.

‘Elves’ guns didn't stop.

For the two days.

You were with the brigade.

Throughout the village.

Roses are in bloom.

The cars speed on to a network.

Of trenches hidden in a line of trees.

Fighting in the recently retaken areas.

Was at close quarters.

There, company commander.

Senior Sergeant, 49.

Runs his men through.

Their next mission.

An ‘elves’ assault is planned.

For the next day on the ‘orcs’ trenches.

3km away at the foot.

Of the low hills to the south.

In their attempt.

To widen the front.

Sections of the 68th Brigade.

Will attack.

From the countryside.

East of Blahodatne and Makarivka.

Across minefields and directly.

In the line of ‘orcs’ fire.

Sgt runs through the drone team's.

Communication protocols and targets.

The section loses as many as.

Five drones a day.

Tanned and with.

A brilliant white grin.

He looks at his grim-faced men.

And gives one final order:

“Smile - why are you so serious?

We are winning the war.”

‘Elves’ forces launch drones to drop.

Smoke grenades near the ‘orcs’ positions.

Throughout the village.

Roses are in bloom.

But the smell of corpses.

Twenty-four hours later.

Most of the same men are.

In a sweltering dugout.

The attack is under way.

From their surveillance cameras.

You can see two armoured vehicles.

Slowly making their way.

Through the minefield.

Drone after drone is sent.

Above the ‘orcs’ positions.

Dropping smoke grenades.

Creating a smoke screen.

Along the ‘orcs’-occupied trenches.

To allow vehicles to advance.

And confuse.

Enemy anti-tank weapons.

As you watch.

‘Elves’ shells repeatedly strike the treeline.

A young soldier runs.

In and out of the dugout.

Changing drone batteries.

And sending them into flight.

While voices bark orders.

And target positions across the radios.

Mosquitoes and horseflies.

Are feasting on the men.

But still one, from western Ukraine.

Has taken his shirt off because of the heat.

Their enemy isn't holding back.

As you stand outside.

An ‘orcs’ strike lands close enough.

To throw dirt into the trench.

Standing lookout.

In wrap-around shades.

And without body armour.

There he is.

Another ‘orcs’ shell lands close.

And you hit the ground.

You look up.

And he hasn't flinched.

He shouts in English.

Expletives directed at the ‘orcs’.

And gives two middle fingers.

To the air.

More broadly.

The counter-offensive is made.

More difficult because of.

The lack of ‘elves’ air power.

The West has promised.

F-16 fighter planes.

But they will not arrive.

Until later this year.

Salvoes of Grad rockets rain down.

On ‘elves’ positions.

Back outside in the trenches.

Another soldier explains:

“ ‘Orcs’ helicopters.

‘Orcs’ jets.

Fire at every area.

Every day”.

He's interrupted.

As another strike lands nearby.

“Go to the shelter.

Good luck,” he says.

When, on 3 June.

‘Gandalf the Green’ announced that.

Ukraine was ready.

For the counter-offensive.

He mentioned ‘orcs’ air superiority.

And warned.

Many ‘elves’ lives would be lost.

And so it has been for the 68th Brigade.

Sgt says this weighs heavily on him.

“The severity of the day.

Depends solely on one thing.

The number of people we lose.”

“The last week.

Has been extremely difficult.

We have lost.

A large number of people.”

On his head he wears.

A ballistic helmet.

A size too small.

You mention it.

And he starts to weep.

“It was my son's.”

His son, 21.

Was killed.

In a drone strike.

Not far from where you speak.

A couple of days before.

The counter-offensive began.

He'd been in the army.

A year.

His father is still.

In the throes of grief.

“A kamikaze drone flew to them.

And in fact hit him directly.

It was impossible to recognise him.

He was buried in a closed coffin.”

Throughout the village.

How does he go on?

“I made a commitment.

You know, we're here to win.

Not to sit back, not to escape.”

“I just think that every person here.

Must do their job professionally.

There is nothing heroic in it.

I just have to finish this job.”

Is he looking for revenge?

He replies firmly:

“Revenge is a sin.

My task is to bring this story to an end.”

“I want to take part.

In the victory parade.

I want us to win.

And I want to lose fewer people.”

You leave the front.

The offensive still under way.

Later, a message telling you.

They'd taken the ‘orcs’ positions.

Returning to the command post.

Sgt's car escorting you.

Swerves and comes to.

A sudden stop.

He, along with others.

Quickly exits the vehicle.

You wonder if you too.

Need to take cover.

Cherry trees.

Then you see what's caught.

Their attention.

Cherry trees.

Like kids, they laugh carefree.

For a moment as they grab.

Handfuls of the dark red fruit.

From the shady branches.

As artillery and mortar fire.

Continues to hammer.

‘Orcs’ positions.

On the hillside.

POETS IN NESKUCHNE

Nearby shelling can also be heard.

Earlier this week.

A video emerged.

Purportedly showing.

Two ‘elves’ soldiers raising it.

Out of this cluster of four.

Settlements in the eastern Donetsk region.

Neskuchne has seen.

The heaviest fighting.

Ukraine lost six soldiers.

In the process.

Its name means.

“Not boring” in ‘elves’ language.

An obvious irony.

For a village.

That was occupied by ‘Mordor’.

In spring last year.

A few weeks after ‘the One’ launched.

His full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

It was at the most northern point.

Of a protruding ‘orcs’ front line.

Your army escort speeds along.

Scarred roads.

In his camouflaged truck.

Towards Neskuchne.

Firstly there are no civilians here.

The only remnants of civilisation.

Come in the form of.

A blown out pharmacy and food store.

There isn't a complex network.

Of trenches either.

It's clear this is a different kind of.

Liberation to what you saw last year.

A makeshift wooden bridge.

Over a river is all it takes.

To take you into territory.

‘Mordor’ has held for so long.

Buildings are also riddled.

With bullet holes from smaller calibre weapons.

There's been a lot of close quarter fighting here.

He doesn't like to hang around for long.

Mortars are periodically fired.

From ‘elves’ troops hidden in.

Thick tree lines.

Or abandoned gardens.

He explains the ‘orcs’ are just.

On the brow of hill in three directions.

The sudden rising of three plumes of smoke.

Is a cue to keep moving.

The ‘orcs’ are responding with Grad missiles.

The situation here is far more fluid.

Than the triumphant claims of liberation.

Which had come from Kyiv this week.

‘Orcs’ forces have been pushing back.

As recently as last night.

Ukraine's counteroffensive is in.

Its early stages with modest gains.

If Neskuchne is anything to go by.

Any liberation will be far from immediate.

And won't necessarily bring.

Freedom straight away.

Residents of Neskuchne.

The village was also.

Briefly occupied in 2014.

Then ‘Mordor’-backed fighters.

Seized large swathes of land.

In the Donetsk and.

Neighbouring Luhansk regions.

The small village then went back.

Into ‘elves’ hands.

Only to be seized by ‘orcs’ troops.

Soon after last year's invasion.

POETS THUNDERING INTO MAKARIVKA

‘Elves’ forces are advancing.

Along three or four axes.

In southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia.

And Donetsk Oblasts.

On the axis running along.

The Mokri Yaly River.

The ‘elves’ aren’t just advancing.

They’re thundering.

Rolling fast along the unpaved road.

Threading north to south from the town.

Of Velyka Novosilka toward Makarivka.

10 miles away.

The ‘elves’ navy’s 35th Marine Brigade.

Has borrowed a tactic.

From the U.S. Army.

In April 2003.

Twenty years later.

The ‘elves’ 35th Marine Brigade is.

More than a week into its own prolonged.

Thunder run along the Mokri Yaly River.

In eight or nine days of hard fighting.

The 2,000-person brigade has liberated.

Several villages—most recently Makarivka.

On Monday.

Speed and shock are key.

The brigade is fairly lightly equipped.

It’s how the brigade is using their vehicles.

That’s key to the unit’s swift advance.

With a T-80 near the front.

A column of Mastiffs rolls down.

The dirt road that runs parallel.

To the Mokri Yaly River.

The tank blasts, at close range.

Any ‘orcs’ positions.

Its three-person crew detects.

On either side of the road.

If the tank has to stop to fire.

Its 125-millimeter main gun.

It does so.

Only briefly.

The tank maintains.

The column’s momentum.

Leaving the 10-person Mastiffs.

With their .50-caliber machine guns.

To kill or scatter.

Any startled ‘orcs’.

who survive the tank fire.

Infantry then dismount and secure the area.

From the U.S. Army.

In April 2003.

“They didn’t expect such speed.

From us going on Mastiffs.”

One marine noted.

After the 35th rolled into Makarivka.

This is exactly how.

The Americans operated.

During the first thunder run.

In 2003.

That thunder runs are back.

Speaks to the ‘elves’ armed forces’ ability.

To learn from the past.

And adapt old tactics to a new war.

And to the ‘orcs’ armed forces’ inability.

To do the same.

But it’s worth noting that a thunder run.

Only works in certain conditions.

The 35th Marine Brigade is attacking.

Along one of the more lightly-fortified axes.

If the marines encountered minefields.

They apparently were nothing like those.

The dense minefields that thwarted.

A Thursday attack by the ‘elves’ army’s.

33rd Mechanized and 47th Assault Brigades.

Just south of Mala Tokmachka.

Mines aren’t the only danger.

As the 35th continues thundering south.

Inasmuch as a thunder run depends on.

Momentum for its shock effect.

And depends on that shock effect for.

Its ability to scatter enemy forces.

Even a few vehicle losses can grind.

A run to a catastrophic halt.

The ‘elves’ likewise might have to.

Make a similar decision.

As the Americans in 2003.

If they haven’t already done so.

It’s worth leaving behind.

A few tanks or trucks.

If that’s the price.

Of forward momentum.

The Mokri Yaly River axis might be.

One of the more lucrative sectors.

Of the southern front.

For ‘elves’ forces.

Especially if the army brigades.

Can’t get past Mala Tokmachka.

It’s no secret that Kyiv is holding.

In reserve half a dozen or more brigades.

Waiting to deploy them.

Wherever the lead brigades.

Open the widest gaps.

In ‘orcs’ defenses.

The longer the 35th prolongs its thunder run.

The more likely ‘elves’ commanders.

Are to send additional brigades.

Rolling along the same axis.

Walking through Storozheve.

They find an abandoned vehicle.

With a “Z” painted on the side.

Which is a symbol used by the ‘orcs’ military.

A fourth village – Storozheve.

In the eastern Donetsk region.

Has been liberated from ‘orcs’ occupation.

Ukraine claims.

‘Elves’ soldiers from 35th Brigade.

Posted a photo.

Saying its soldiers retook.

The village of Storozheve.

“Don't call it a counter-offensive.

This is our offensive.

It's our chance to finally drive out.

The ‘orcs’ army from our land.”

After months of stalemate.

Images of victorious, battle-stained ‘elves’ soldiers.

Holding up their country's blue and yellow flag.

In front of a bullet-ridden building.

It is a welcome morale boost.

For ‘elves’.

But in the big strategic picture.

This is a sideshow.

The area of ‘orcs’-held territory.

That matters most in this campaign.

Is the south: the area between.

The city of Zaporizhzhia and the Sea of Azov.

This is the so-called.

“Land corridor”.

That connects ‘Mordor’.

To illegally annexed Crimea.

If Ukraine can split that in two.

And hold the ground it's retaken.

Then its offensive will.

Have largely been successful.

It would cut off ‘orcs’ troops.

In the west and.

Make it hard to resupply.

Their garrison in Crimea.

It would not necessarily spell.

An end to the war.

Which some are now predicting.

Could drag on for years.

But it would put Ukraine.

In a strong bargaining position.

When the inevitable peace talks.

Finally take place.

But the ‘orcs’ have looked.

At the map.

Quite some time ago.

And reached the same conclusion.

So while Ukraine sent its soldiers off.

To Nato countries for training.

And readied their 12 armoured brigades.

For this summer campaign.

‘Mordor’ spent that time.

Constructing what is now being called.

“The most formidable defensive.

Fortifications in the world”.

Blocking Ukraine's path.

To the coast.

Its own coast, let's not forget.

Are layer upon layer.

Of ‘orcs’ minefields.

“Dragons' teeth” bunkers.

Firing positions.

And trenches.

All of this is covered by.

Pre-determined artillery impact zones.

Calibrated to rain down.

High explosive.

On Ukraine's armoured vehicles.

As they and their crews wait for.

Their engineers to find.

A way through.

The early signs are.

And it is still very early in this campaign.

That those ‘orcs’ defences are.

So far holding fast.

In Ukraine's favour is morale.

Its soldiers are highly-motivated.

And fighting to liberate.

Their own country from an invader.

POETS IN NOVODARIVKA

Novodarivka was recaptured.

On 4 June.

Writes the Zaporizhzhya.

Detached territorial defence brigade.

The brigade says.

“Multiple attempts” by the ‘orcs’ side.

To snatch back the settlement.

Since that day have been unsuccessful.

“The brigade's units.

Continue to increase.

Their success!

Victory will be ours!”

Storozheve, in the west of the Donetsk region.

Is not far from the settlements.

Of Blahodatne, Neskuchne and Makarivka.

Whose recapture was announced over the weekend.

Troops have also said.

They regained Novodarivka.

In the neighbouring Zaporizhzhia region.

Earlier this month.

The sight of soldiers once again.

Hoisting ‘elves’ flags.

In liberated settlements is an exciting one.

For the country and its allies.

This counter-offensive is still.

In its early phase.

It’s reflected by the ‘elves’ attacking.

In multiple areas with modest gains.

They’re still costly as well.

In the southern Zaporizhzhia region in particular.

A lot of men and equipment have been lost.

As Kyiv tries to probe for a weakness.

Building heavy fortifications.

Also plays to an ‘orcs’ strength.

As they’ve had months to prepare.

Neither side has deployed their main forces yet.

Novodarivka was recaptured.

On 4 June.

Writes the Zaporizhzhya.

Detached territorial defence brigade.

The brigade says.

“Multiple attempts” by the ‘orcs’ side.

To snatch back the settlement.

Since that day have been unsuccessful.

“The brigade's units.

Continue to increase.

Their success!

Victory will be ours!”

Aware of a poet?
A poet of Cossack broods over the land.
