A POET WITH CAISSA
Where is the board?
Caissa is with me.
Art, only art.
Her ruthless breast can move.
Endless bombardment.
Without water and food.
Trapped or luring?
Playing chess.
Not on the Mars’ tablet.
Not with the mimick troops.
Developing Bishop.
Castling Rook.
Manoeuvring Knight.
Sacrificing Queen.
Marching King.
Pushing passed pawns.
Where is the centre?
Where is the kingside?
Where is the queenside?
Where is the bold King?
Who must be secure?
From danger at all costs?
From whose point of view?
Caissa is with me.
Wounded defenders.
Leaving the fortress.
Minerva is calling.
Caissa, her chief to arms.
And Mars engaged
mightier force in vain.
Shall live eternal
on the poet’s tongue.
Not only Agamemnon.
Not only Pandarus.
Not yet peaceful slept
the sable hero’s shade.

"Aware of a poet?
Aware of a poet?
A poet of Cossack broods over the land.
Not noting a bullet.
Not noting a bullet.
You see a poet of Cossack in Borodyanka."
